They say some paths are meant to cross. On September 7th, 2022, in the south of Mexico, Daan’s trip with friends and Monica’s solo journey met at the edge of the 'Lagoon of Seven Colors.' What started as a chance encounter in the paradise of Bacalar turned into a conversation that hasn't stopped for a single day since. From those magical turquoise waters to this very moment, we haven't spent a day without sharing our lives.
When you meet someone who lives 12,000 km away, you discover that falling in love isn't a single moment, but a million small ones. What started as daily messages about random things quickly turned into non-negotiable video calls every weekend. Just three months after we met, Daan decided to fly to Aguascalientes to see Monica’s smile again. In our first year alone, we shared 209 hours of video calls, took 22 flights between Mexico and The Netherlands (covering over 100,000 km), and explored 24 cities across 5 different countries. We learned to be patient with distance, time zones, language, and cultural barriers, as well as how to be present in each other's lives even across the physical distance. Early in our relationship, we began dreaming of a life together, and after a long journey to make it happen, we finally found our home in Barcelona.
Bacalar witnessed our first meeting, the Pacific stood by as we conquered the distance, and the Aegean Sea became the stage for a commitment that had lived in our hearts for a long time. Last summer, during a trip to Greece, Daan took his role as 'Captain Daan' very seriously and rented a boat to explore the coast of Crete. While sailing alongside a breathtaking cliff, he dropped anchor and asked the most important question of our lives. Of all our adventures together, this one—at the edge of the Aegean—is our favorite one yet.
Our next destination? Life together. After thousands of kilometers and many airports, we are finally checking in for our greatest adventure yet. From Mexico to the Netherlands, and now settled in Barcelona, our future looks bright, multicultural, and full of love. We can’t wait to see where this journey takes us next, with you by our side.
